REGION:
South Australia, 2010
VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Angove owned Organically certified Nanya vineyards and premium growers in the Riverland region. Soils are predominantly red sandy loam over limestone, on gently undulating east west ridges.
Harvest in 2010 was almost perfect; after a long wait some water returned to the Murray Darling system, the life blood of Australia’s inland regions, and growers were able to irrigate sensibly. The weather was consistent with sunny days and cool nights, except for a short heat spell in early November which stressed vines whilst flowers were setting. A subsequent smaller than normal yield resulted, which in turn meant more intense flavour.
Harvest began early as the flavours and tannins ripened quickly, producing grapes deep in colour and rich in texture. Drink in memory of the long warm nights of a balmy Australian summer.
The grapes for this wine were picked at night to make sure that they were as cool as possible. Crushed to modern rotary fermenters the grapes were then allowed to macerate for 2 days before inoculation and fermentation. Pressed off skins 7 days later and allowed to go through the second malolactic fermentation. Stored in small oak barrels until assemblage the wine has then had minimal handling prior to filtration for bottling at our certified Organic winery.
WINEMAKERS’ NOTES:
Deep red with purple hues this is a vibrant and spicy wine. The dark fruit aromas of raspberry and red cherries blend perfectly with the spicy pepper and soft oak flavours on the palate, with a long yet soft, earthy finish.
This is a versatile wine which is fantastic on its own or as an accompaniment to various red meat dishes, pizza, pasta or barbeques.

“This blend, sourced from selected certified organic grape growers in South Australia, is a deep crimson red with a strong showing of purple. The spicy aroma - with prominent dark berries - is intense but not cloying. This full-flavoured wine is peppery and has a little gusto without being intimidating. An enjoyable drop and well-priced.”

The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Bloody Good
"I thought this was sensationally good. Angove is a family company that has been in Renmark for 99 years and has never performed better than it does at present. It’s a progressive company looking to redevelop its 480-hectare Nanya Vineyards in the Riverland over a ten-year period, experimenting with organic viticulture, sourcing fruit from premium area and buying some quality blocks in the regions like McLaren Vale. I loved the floral perfumes of the 2008 Organic Shiraz Cabernet, its attractive ripe, sweet redcurrant and blackberry flavours, hint of brambles and cedary oak and silky smooth texture. The tannins are noticeable, but the finish is still attractive and the wine supple and approachable. Quaff on!"

'While organic produce may be flavour of the month, it is also critical that the flavour in the mouth also lives up to expectations. This wine, sourced from selected certified organic grape growers in South Australia, opens with a decent nose of blackberry and floral spices. Erring on the lighter side in bodyweight, the fruit intensity delivers blackberry and nutmeg with a dry alcohol finish.'

'It's one of the only widely available organic red wines on the market - surprisingly. There should be more of them. It's a fine drink, too. Beautiful wine to drink. Has lovely texture and lovely flavour - jubey blackberries and blackcurrants and a nice lick of liquorice spice. It carries nicely along your tongue and seems full and satisfying as you swallow it. Regardless of its organic status - an important point - it's simply a good red wine.'

'I'm a huge admirer of the Riverland producer Angove. Together with Yalumba and De Bortoli, they have been the top performers in Quaff over the past five years. 'Not only does it have a mouth-filling flavor, but it demonstrates Australia's great blend: shiraz and cabernet. This gives it richness and structure.'

'Organically grown and made wine that is part of the second release of this range from Angoves. Has a fine, soft, generous texture with a silky smooth palate profile. Lovely tannin and oak influence with lifted savoury and vanillin aromas. Nice current drinking wine.'
Daily Telegraph - Jeff Collerson - 14.11.09
'This is family-owned Angove's second crop of certified organic wines. Winemaker Tony Ingle has created a medium-bodied wine with a pleasant plum fruit palate, with nice firm tannins on the finish.'
SA Life Magazine - Oct 2009
'Big wine companies were expected to be the last to embrace organics, with the added cost of hands on viticulture being seen as a barrier to such specialisation. However, Angove has done it and is making a commitment to embrace organic viticulture further. Fruit for this plush, juicy and opulent blend is sourced from growers in the Riverland and Langhorne Creek, although 40ha of Angove's own 480ha Nanya vineyard at Renmark is currently being converted and its grapes from 2011 will be classified as organic. The company's viticulturist and winemakers are already seeing marked differences between the fruit harvested in this section with better fruit set, thicker skins in the shiraz and cabernet grapes and improved vine health. It translates to increased fruit freshness in this wine, boasting a full palate and bright flavours without being bulky or overblown.'

Organic Shiraz Cabernet 2007
'Part of the new organic range from Angove. Colour is deep and dark. The mix of dark chocolate, plum and damp earth is immediately complex on the nose. The palate is rich and flavoursome with a chunky full feel in the mouth. Honest and appealing. 86/100'

The 2007 Angove Organic Shiraz Cabernet ($14) is sourced from Loxton, shows ripe plummy fruits, a touch of spice and smooth, fine-knit tannins and is beautifully approachable.
