Big Blokes Red

Big-Blokes-Red

  1. $20.00
REGION: 2008, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:

The grapes for this wine were sourced from Angove’s own Nanya vineyards and premium growers in the Riverland region. Soils are predominantly red sandy loam over limestone, on gently undulating east west ridges.

Spring rains allowed the vines to develop a healthy canopy, setting up the 2009 Vintage. It was a relatively cool growing season, the exception being a short heatwave in February. The red varieties ripened in a slow and steady manner, allowing to the fruit to develop bright stable colour, a fine tannin structure and excellent varietal aromatic flavour. The resulting wines are deep in colour, rich and varietal.

The grapes for this wine were picked at night to make sure that they were as cool as possible.  Crushed to modern rotary fermenters the grapes were then allowed to macerate for 2 days before inoculation and fermentation.  Pressed off skins 7 days later and allowed to go through the second malolactic fermentation. The wine has then had minimal handling prior to filtration for bottling.

WINEMAKERS' NOTES:
Inky black with purple and garnet hues, this wine follows its lovely colour with aromas of rich plum redcurrant and liquorice together with spicy vanillin oak.  The soft silky texture and fruit richness of the palate have great length and finish with exquisite mouth filling dark fruit flavours.

It is the ideal big red to enjoy around the bqq with your mates.

Quaff 2011 - Peter Forrestal
The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Pretty Good

'Judging by the reaction at my place, it’s not only the Big Blokes who will enjoy this.  It does need a good swirl to open it up, but there’s lively fruit and smooth texture.'

Winestate Magazine - Vol 33 Issue 4 - July/August 2010
"Angove's has released a new red wine that aims to raise funds and lift awareness of prostate cancer.  The family-owned winery will donate 50c from every bottle sold of Big Blokes Red, a 2008 shiraz from the Limestone Coast, to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia."

Surf Coast Times - Jon Helmer - 22.06.10

'Ripe, juicy bright red fruit aromatics on the nose lead to a big, generous mouthful of primary cherry/berry fruits on the palate. It's a good, easy drinking red developed for a good cause and would be perfect fare for your next big steak night out with the lads.'
The Krow - Tony Keys - June 2010 - 89 Points

'The gimmick is 50 cents of every bottle sold goes to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. As a bloke over 50 I like that. As far as the wine is concerned it's a good well balanced Shiraz no thrills but no spills either.'

Sunday Examiner - 09.05.10

'You've got to love a juicy barbecue red with truckloads of flavour that's disarmingly easy to drink. When drinking one helps out a charity; that's a bonus. Angove's will donate 50 cents from each bottle sold to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and hope to lift awareness of the disease. The wine is big, inky and powerful with softness on the palate. Great value.'

City News - 29.04.10

'Angove Family Winemakers are supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia by producing a new wine, Big Blokes Red. The wine is a premium shiraz from the Limestone Coast in South Australia. And, blokes - it's a full bodied wine perfect for barbecues. For every bottle sold, 50 cents will be donated to the PCFA.'

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:

The winemakers at Angove Family Winemakers have searched through the premium regions of South Australia for the exceptional parcels of fruit used in this wine. Padthaway and Wrattonbully in the South East, McLaren Vale and The Flinders Ranges further to the north and our premium vineyards in the Riverland region all provide parcels for this blend, each adding nuances and complexity to the finished work.

2008 was an early vintage, with good ripening conditions in January and February followed by some extreme heat in March. Disease pressures very low, but ripening occured quickly putting demands on the winemakers to manage grape harvest timing carefully.
Perfect integration and balance in this wine was achieved through ageing in small oak barrels to impart rich, full spice and vanillin flavours. The wine then had minimal handling prior to filtration and bottling on the Angove Family Estate.

WINEMAKERS' NOTES:
Deep purple with brooding red hues this rich, full bodied wine shows ripe berry, plum and cherry characters on the nose and palate.

It is the ideal big red to enjoy around the BBQ with your mates.
