Premium Fortified Shiraz

  1. $13.15
REGION:
Riverland, South Australia

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
Sourced from a single vineyard in the small Riverland village of Lyrup, the vines are grown on heavy alluvial soil which succours them through the harsh times of a Riverland vintage. The grapes were picked whilst still showing fruit vibrancy and crushed into 60 yr old wax lined concrete open fermenters and cooled to 10c.

Inoculated with selected yeast after 48hrs the ferment was allowed to continue until the perfect residual sugar extraction balance was reached and the yeast stopped by the addition of premium neutral grape spirit. Further maceration extracted further complex tannins and the skins were then pressed and reincorporated with the free run wine. After a short period relaxing in our 90 year old cellars the wine was gently filtered and bottled before being bottle aged for 2 years prior to release.

Due to the traditional way this wine is made a harmless crust may develop in the bottle after cellaring. It is advisable to decant this wine to remove any sediment to fully enjoy this exquisite Vintage Australian Fortified Shiraz.

WINEMAKERS’ NOTES:
Opaque deep purple, the aromas of briar fruit and spirit jump from the glass, in the mouth rich luscious fruit is reinforced by soft tannins, providing a classical fortified shiraz with a twist.

Quaff 2011 - Peter Forrestal
The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Pretty Good
2007 Vintage

“Similar to the 2005 but not in the same class.  It’s over-the-top, jammy, with lush Ribena flavours and a gentle grip to finish.  Many will love it.”

Quaff 2011 - Peter Forrestal
The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Bloody Good
2005 Vintage
“I loved this vintage fortified last year and commented that ‘it’s priced to sell’.  That didn’t work too well, as Angove have dropped the price further this year.  As to the wine itself, it is over the top, jammy, reminiscent of Ribena, full throttle, but it does have some delicious ripe concentrated plummy, licorice and dark chocolate flavours.  It has fleshy, velvety texture and a seductively sweet finish.  This is the Aussie classic vintage port that we’ve known and loved.  It’s almost your patriotic duty to gulp it down.  If Sam Kekovich were promoting it you wouldn’t be able to get enough of it.  You know it makes sense!”

Quaff 2010 - Peter Forrestal
The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Bloody Good
“This is a straightforward yet wonderfully drinkable Aussie fortified - what used to be called ‘vintage port’.  It has ripe, plumy, licorice and dark chocolate flavours, velvety texture and a seductively sweet finish.”

Quaff 2008 - The Best Wines in Australia under $10 - Peter Forrestal
Angove's Fortified Shiraz - rated "Good"
"This is very much in the Aussie vintage port style - ripe, dark plum and licorice flavours that are rich, concentrated and sweet, a lush texture, and some firm tannins to finish."

Winestate - May/June 2005 - Fortified Wine Tasting
“A well developed wine with a complex, chocolaty nose and strong coffee bean aromas. Simple, sweet palate, touch jammy.“

Penguin Wine Guide - 2004/2005
“It looks like a vintage port, but it's soft and fruity, low in tannin, sweet and ready to drink. At eight years of age, Angove's has done most of the patient work for us. The colour is deep and youthful; it smells of dark chocolate and squashed blackberries, with a hint of black olive. It's soft, round and starting to mellow and the aftertaste is all blackstrap licorice. Try it with stilton cheese.”

Winestate - November/December 2003
Premium Vintage Port
Top 40 - 4 Stars
“Lovely aged complex aromas with an obvious licorice/brandy spirit lift. Complex, spirity licorice palate. Good drinking now but still has plenty more ageing potential.”
